With some major upsets in round 1 of the 2017 AFL season, we were happy to come away with six from nine tips winning. Unfortunately, both Sydney teams losing cost us our multi but we’ll look to bounce back this week.
Please be aware that these are our early picks prior to team announcements. Odds may also change significantly depending on any major selection shocks. Check back Wednesday and Thursday night for our final tips for round 2 after we’ve assessed all team lists.

Richmond ($2.10) v Collingwood ($1.74)
Richmond were pretty good in their win over Carlton but it’s a difficult to rate them highly on that performance against a weak opposition.
Collingwood fought hard against last year’s Premiers and won most of the stats. If they can bring that performance into this match against the Tigers, they’ll have a good win.
Collingwood by 24.
Western Bulldogs ($1.57) v Sydney ($2.39)
The biggest upset last week was Sydney losing at home to Port Adelaide. Sydney simply didn’t want it enough and Port Adelaide were outstanding all around the ground.
The Bulldogs were solid last week and found an extra gear at the critical moments of the match.
We think Sydney will be much improved on last week’s effort, but the Bulldogs will keep doing what it takes to get over the line.
Western Bulldogs by 12.
Hawthorn ($2.25) v Adelaide ($1.65)
The Crows were excellent in their win over GWS – even after Big Tex as a late withdrawal.
Hawthorns loss to Essendon is a tough one to judge. Are the Bombers that good? Are the Hawks still getting used to playing together without key players from previous years?
Either way, we think the Hawks will improve sharply for this match and come away with a narrow win (as underdogs).
Hawthorn by 8.
Greater Western Sydney ($1.13) v Gold Coast ($6.05)
GWS put in a really lackluster performance last week and should bounce back with a vengeance this week at home.
The Suns were very average against the Lions and quickly gave away a seven goal lead in the first quarter. We’d expect them to be more competitive early in the match this week but GWS will run over the top of them after half-time and come away convincing winners.
GWS by 48.
Brisbane ($3.00) v Essendon ($1.40)
Both teams are coming off good wins in the opening round, but Essendon’s win against a higher quality opposition will have them in better shape for this game.
Brisbane caught the Gold Coast off guard last week and jumped to a seven goal lead. That won’t happen this week against the Bombers and we think the Lions face a tough challenge to stick with Essendon on the scoreboard.
Essendon to easily cover the current -17.5 line.
Essendon by 48.
West Coast ($1.16) v St Kilda ($5.30)
West Coast were excellent last week against the Roos and are at home this week. Josh Kennedy was on target and Sam Mitchell helped take the focus off some of the other Eagles midfielders who ran riot against North Melbourne.
The Saints started okay but quickly fell away quickly and finished the game poorly. We don’t expect to see any sudden improvements this week when they travel to Perth.
West Coast, despite their ruck issues, will have another big win this week.
West Coast by 54.
Geelong ($1.25) v North Melbourne ($4.00)
Geelong put in a good performance over in the West against Fremantle and came away with a good win.
The Roos didn’t put in the worst performance over the weekend and were up against a tough opposition. Unfortunately for the Roos, things don’t get any easier this week.
We expect Geelong to be too good at home and come away with the win over the Roos, who won’t be short of effort.
Geelong by 28.
Melbourne ($1.20) v Carlton ($4.60)
Melbourne put in a great performance last week against a disappointing St Kilda and they probably face a lower level of competition again here.
Carlton were never in the game against Richmond last Thursday night and probably deserved to lose by more.
We expect Melbourne to have another big win.
Melbourne by 52.
Port Adelaide ($1.27) v Fremantle ($3.78)
Port Adelaide put in the best performance of the round to beat the Swans in Sydney and they are at hime this week.
Fremantle look like they are in for another frustrating year despite having Fyfe and Sandilands back. Will Lyon be the first coach sacked for 2017?
If Port Adelaide can put in a performance to match last week’s effort, they will be comfortable winners.
Port Adelaide by 38.
AFL Round 2 Multi Special
We are going to play a few of the safer options in our multi this week and add in a few margins to give the odds a small boost. The margins are quite small but we think these teams will cover them easily against the weaker opposition.
