Round 13 of the 2017 AFL season is the final bye round for the year and sees six teams having the week off, giving us a total of six matches.
This is looking like a really tough week for punters (and tipping comps) because you could make a case for any team in any game! We think it’s best to keep the stakes low this week but there will be some good value around if you can manage to find the winners!
Read on to find out what we like for round 13 of the 2017 AFL season!
Below are our early picks prior to team announcements on Wednesday and Thursday night.
We will also consider a small bet on a multi at good odds in what looks like a week where many of the underdogs could actually get up.

20:10 West Coast ($2.05) v Geelong ($1.80) @ Domain Stadium
Both teams are coming off the bye and both teams will want to be switched on from the very first bounce or they could risk being blown out early.
Both teams are also without their key forwards in Josh Kennedy (calf) and Tom Hawkins (suspension) which evens things up a bit, but Kennedy has to be the bigger loss for the Eagles as he plays a more crucial role than what Hawkins does for Geelong. That is not to say that Hawkins isn’t a huge loss for Geelong, but I believe the Cats can cover his loss better.
It’s tough to tip against Geelong here as they have been in scintillating form just before the bye and we’ll stick with them to grind out the win here in a tightly contested battle.
Geelong by 16
19:50 North Melbourne ($2.00) v St Kilda ($1.83) @ Etihad Stadium
North Melbourne are coming off the bye and the Saints are coming off a terrible defeat by the Crows.
St Kilda play really good football when they’re on, but they’ve now lost three games in a row and played well below their potential. Can they bounce back here?
The Roos are always up for a tough game and are putting in the more consistent and competitive efforts.
These teams match up pretty well and we expect this to be a tight, contested game.
We’ll take the Roos to win a close one.
North Melbourne by 8
13:45 Richmond ($2.00) v Sydney ($1.82) @ MCG
Richmond are coming off the bye after winning their last two matches in good fashion. They come up against the Swans who are they only team to have won four of their last five matches.
Sydney just continue to get better with each week now but it’s hard to tell if they are really back or they are just going through a patch of good form.
Based on their performances over previous years, we’d have to say that the dominant Sydney team that we all know is back and they are looking to play finals.
This will be a great game and one that we won’t be betting on. If you must place a bet on this one, the tri bet for either team to win be -15.5 @ $2.60 looks to be a good option.
For tipping purposes, we’ll take Sydney in this game.
Sydney by 10
16:35 Port Adelaide ($1.05) v Brisbane ($10.50) @ Adelaide Oval
Were Port bad last week or were Essendon that good at their best? Port will be wanting to quickly make amends for that effort and they get their chance at home against what should be a much weaker opposition.
However, Port need to be cautious and must not take the Lions lightly. Brisbane played a great contested match last week and Zorko is currently one of the form players of the competition.
Port should win this one well, but Brisbane at $10.50 looks to be massive overs. If Port show up with anything less than maximum effort, expect to see the young Lions capitalise.
We’ll tip Port to win comfortably.
Port Adelaide by 42
19:25 Gold Coast ($1.37) v Carlton ($3.10) @ Metricon Stadium
The Suns were great in a come from behind win over the Hawks last week and there’s no reason they can’t go on with it at home against Carlton this week.
The Blues played their best game of the year last week in defeating the Giants by one point, but how much did that win take it out of them? It was a really good win, one of their best in years, but they travel up to the Gold Coast where the Suns are usually at their best.
Based on last weeks performances, we would take Carlton, however, we think that win would have taken too much out of their young players to back up that win on the Gold Coast.
We’ll pick the Suns to run over the top in the second half against a fatiguing Blues outfit.
Gold Coast by 32
15:20 Western Bulldogs ($1.56) v Melbourne ($2.45) @ Etihad Stadium
The Dogs were simply not in the game against the Swans last week and would be very disappointed with that effort and outcome.
Part of the reason for that was the Swans getting stuck into Jason Johannisen, who had no impact on the game. It will be interesting to see if the Demons follow those tactics to limit the Dog’s run out of defence.
Melbourne were great against he Pies on Monday afternoon and they simply wanted the win more.
There’s a lot to like about the Demons never say die attitude this year – some would say it’s almost similar to a team who went on to win the Premiership last year. They always have belief they can win.
This game will be a cracker. Both teams are aggressive and will fight it out to the very end.
Tough game to pick, but we’ll take the Demons in a close one.
The best betting option for this game might be either team to win be -15.5 @ $2.70.
Melbourne by 6
This weeks multi:
Cats 1-39 @ $2.40
Roos 1-39 @ $2.50
Tigers v Swans – either team by -15.5 @ $2.60
Bulldogs v Demons – either team by -15.5 @ $2.70
Total odds = $42.12
A $25 wager would pay out $1,053 at current odds.
